DVD Shrink

DVD Shrink is software to compress movie DVD discs to fit into the 4.7GB capacity of a DVD-R disc. You can use this software in conjunction with DVD burning software of your choice, to make a backup copy of any DVD video disc. Shrink’s user interface offer a lot of possibilities for re-authoring the disc, or finetuning the compression settings.

Development of DVD Shrink has ended, due to legal issues. We are hosting the final released version v3.2.0.15. Note that some malicious software vendors have created others software misleadingly titled as ‘DVD Shrink’, but this is the one and only real thing.

DVD Rebuilder (DVD-RB)

DVD Rebuilder (DVD-RB) is currently the highest quality method to backup a DVD, while retaining menus and extras. The software acts as a front-end for various tools, and provides a simple “one-click” interface for DVD to DVD-R compression.

Instead of performing a quick transcoding, which results in a lesser quality copy, DVD-RB re-encoder the video using an external video encoder. This can be the commercial Cinemacraft Encoder, or one of the high quality freeware alternatives such as HC Encoder or QuEnc.

Using DVD Rebuilder Pro

In this guide we will use DVD Rebuilder Pro to make a backup of DVD. DVD Rebuilder is pretty easy to use and there’s also some nice features for advanced users. DVD-RB doesn’t require any commercial MPEG-2 encoder, though one can be used. In DVD-RB Pro you can use either QuEnc, HC, ReJig, ProCoder or Cinema Craft Encoder as encoder. The latter two are commercial encoders. The Pro version supports ILVU encoding and has “No compression” mode.

FixVTS

FixVTS is a very tiny tool that allows you to adjust your DVD files into better DVD compliance, so they can be opened in DVDShrink or vobblanker. This is especially useful if your DVD had some kind of copy protection that prevents DVDShrink from opening it. FixVTS can fix that for you. Another use case might be DVDs authored with set-top DVD recorders, which sometimes break DVD compliancy in disc creation.

Improve DVD backup quality with MenuShrink

No matter what DVD-to-DVD-R compressor or transcoding software you use, MenuShrink will improve the quality of the backup. The scheme is simple - by replacing the animated menus with still picture some more free space is recovered. This free space is then used for the actual movie, resulting in higher average bit rate thus giving you better image quality. What is surprising is the amount of space that can be saved. For example The Star Wars Trilogy (Episodes IV, V, VI) has menu structures of roughly 500 megabytes for each disc. At the MenuShrink homepage (no longer exist) there were reported savings of over 2000 megabytes! Now as the net capacity of a single layer DVD recordable disc is about 4.3 gigabytes, the amount of space saved by shrinking the menu is substantial, and may result as an dramatic improvement to the overall quality.

Best of all - MenuShrink is free, and extremely easy to use - download it form HERE. The guide is yet to be converted to our new site platform, but you can read it from our archive in HERE.

MenuShrink

MenuShrink is a convient tool for improving DVD compression, without sacrificing the quality of the video. MenuShrink accomplishes this by replacing animated DVD menus with still images, thus freeing a lot of data capacity for the video. In some movies the savings are hundreds of megabytes and even movies with more that 1 GB of menu content exist! In such cases the quality improvement of the video can be substantial.

Even though MenuShrink is fully legal software and does not infringe any copyrights, by decrypting procteions or otherwise, Jean got into legal issues for MenuShrink and was forced to quit developing the software. We are currently hosting the last released version v2.41 of MenuShrink.
