Nintendo will replace faulty wriststraps

Nintendo has been forced to upgrade its Wii console after users discovered a major flaw - the weakness of a piece of string. The string which attaches the remote control handset (known as the wiimote) to the player’s wrist has been breaking. The wiihaveaproblem.com feature photographs of people with black eyes, bruises and dislocated knees as weel as broken windows etc caused by over-enthusiastic use of the devices. Nintendo announced today that it would be exchanging free of charge the straps on all 3.2 million wiimote controllers already sold.

Sony’s and Pioneer’s Blu-ray players are identical twins

The Pioneer Elite BDP-HD1 Blu-ray player and the Sony BDP-S1 appear to be almost identical twins, or at least very much based on the same technology. The reviews and comparisons of these high quality players have revealed same components being used and identical performance, while the Pioneer has a few more advanced features and a more stylish piano black design. Based on Pioneer’s statement, they are manufacturing their own player while Sony has sent out a comment that they have used Pioneer components in a device designed by Sony. Either way, the both players have received rather good reviews, but the Pioneer comes with a +$500 more on the price tag.

Lite-On IT launches its first BD burner in Japan

According to DigiTimes, Lite-On IT has launched LH-2B1S serial ATA Blu-ray Disc (BD) Triple Writer, in Japan at a retail price of US$600. The price is much lower than BD burners offered by other vendors (approx. US$1000). The price gap between the BD burners and HD DVD-ROM drives offered by Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard is now also much narrower.

PS2 still rules, Sony to ship 1M PS3’s in 2006

Everyone’s focus is on the next generation consoles and their sales figures, but the fact is that PlayStation 2 is still dominating the market. Nintendo Sued Over Wii Remote

According to DailyTech, Nintendo has been hit with the patent infringement lawsuit over its Wii controllers. Interlink Electronics is suing Nintendo over the Wii Remote’s trigger button, which Interlink claims to be its own original patented design. The Wii Remote trigger is similar to the Z-trigger found on the Nintendo 64, which was released in North America on September 29, 1996. Interlink filed its patent for its trigger operated electronic device on September 17, 1997. The N64 controller shows that Nintendo had the trigger design in its labs long before Interlink patented its idea.

New ConvertXtoDVD version leaked!

A new version of the famous ConvertXtoDVD software has leaked from the download servers of the VSO Software. The version comes with the version number of 2.1.6.181 and there are a lot of bug fixes included. ConvertXtoDVD, or “X2D”, is an excellent tool that converts virtually any video file into the standard DVD format. Go download the new version as long at it is available on the VSO servers. Note that this version is not officially released, so it should be considered as beta.

BitTorrent, Inc. graps uTorrent!

The best BitTorrent client has now been acquired by BitTorrent, Inc. and the author Bram Cohen and one can immediately smell the fish here. BitTorrent, Inc. is pushing hard to improve the reputation of BitTorrent protocol, as it is often considered synonymous to Internet piracy and they have also made deals with the movie industry. At the same time uTorrent has become the most popular BitTorrent client as it is an excellent piece of coding, offering the best features and low memory footprint (compare to bloatware Azureus, etc). So was this just a tactical maneuver to buy uTorrent out of business, or a genuine attempt to improve BitTorrent development?
