BackupHDDVD tool can rip HD DVD movies?

It seems that there is a tool for decrypting AACS protected movies in Doom9 forum - BackupHDDVD. The user “muslix64” claims that this java based tool can decrypt and rip HD DVD movies. There is even video clip in the Youtube which will demonstrate the whole process. If this is real and not a hoax then this is serious problem for HD DVD camp.

Taiwan optical discs makers will enjoy considerable profits in 2007

According to DigiTimes, Taiwan-based makers of optical discs will enjoy considerable profits in 2007 if price-cutting by industry players to grab orders stops. Taiwanese makers are still quoting prices lower than production costs in order to grab orders, according to CMC Magnetics chairman Robert Wong. CMC adjusted its operating strategy by declining low-price orders in the third quarter of 2006. As a result, CMC’s overall gross margin and profit rate are higher than those of other Taiwan-based makers.

Microsoft extends Xbox 360 warranty

Xbox 360 owners are getting a gift from Microsoft, according to MSN. The company says it’s extending the warranty on the Xbox 360. Instead of 90-days, the devices will now be covered for a full year. The change applies not only to new purchases, but also to those who already own an Xbox 360. Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 already had one year waranty.

According to Boomtown, Several reports suggest that demand in the US for PS3 is not all Sony could hope for. A company which tracks the availability of items at online stores says it has noticed a drop in demand for PS3. Rather than selling out, many consoles are being left unsold. Wii does Opera

No, this is not high culture content emerging for the budget console, but rather the web browser by Opera software. Despite having been on the market for years, Opera has not gained the acceptance of the masses, but it has a small but loyal fan base. Opera has also had some success in mobile devices and they have a smart rendering feature for smaller resolutions. This is most likely on of the reason why Nintendo has chosen to work with Opera, as the Wii does not have a HD resolution, so it is less than optimal for web browsing.

Prices for DVD discs may rise 5-10%

DigiTimes reported that CMC and Ritek will not run their plants during the Chinese New Year holiday in mid-February, the monthly production capacity of DVD discs in the whole industry will shrink by nearly 1/3. There will be a shortage in the optical discs market and CMC plans to to raise the price of DVD discs by 8-10% while Ritek will increase its price by 5-10% in the 1Q of 2007.

Wii has some shipment problems

Wii has become a huge success in many countries like US, UK, Australia and Japan. According to The Inquirer, it seems Nintendo have also some problems with shipments, although not quite on the scale of Sony. The CDR-Zone has published another comprehensive DVD media review. This time they tested and analyzed the high speed DVD-R Dual Layer disc by Verbatim (Mitsubishi). Their conclusion seems to be that Verbatim has delivered high quality media, but the out-of-date firmwares and write strategies of certain recorders used in the test are causing variation in the results.
