Lite-On IT to make HP HD100 external HD DVD-ROM drive

According to DigiTimes, Lite-On IT is going to produce HP HD100 external HD DVD-ROM drives. Lite-On IT has landed an OEM order from Hewlett-Packard (HP). Shipments should begin soon. Lite-On IT has confirmed the news on October 18 but declined to release any further information. It would be so nice to finally have HD DVD-ROM drives to market. Blu-ray Disc burners have been shipping for months now, why is HD DVD taking so long to catch up?

HD DVD Writers/Readers coming soon?

There is some Blu-ray burners already on the market but where is the PC HD DVD burners? PC World has interviewed Maciek Brzeski, vice president of marketing for the Toshiba Storage Device Division to find out why. Last month, Toshiba announced it would ship the slim-line drive it showed during the summer. Maciek Brzeski says they expects to start shipping the slim-line drive by the end of the year: “We don’t expect to see [the drives] in holiday [products], but certainly we expect to see them shipping in notebooks by late Q1 of next year.”.

Xbox360 HD DVD drive recognized as optical drive on PCs?

According to Gizmodo, the Xbox360 HD-DVD drive can be plugged into a PC and it will be recognized as an optical drive, but it will not play HD-DVD movies. Could it be possible with the proper HD-DVD software on the PC? Maybe. Well, $199 dollar HD DVD external drives that would work on a PC with a software addition sounds pretty cool to me.

Taiwan ODD makers unlikely to launch HD DVD/Blu-ray hybrid models

NEC anounced few days ago that they began shipping a chip compatible with both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. Taiwan-based optical disc drive (ODD) makers now say that they are not considering launching dual-standard drive models for the two disc standards. Although NEC claims the new dual-standard chips can help reduce costs by 20-30%.

50G Blu-ray movies hitting the shelves

The first Blu-ray movie releases were single layer 25 gigabyte discs, but the next wave of releases is utilizing the 50G dual layer capacity. As the releasing method picks up in quality, so are the released titles. The first dual layer Blu-ray movies include Click, Kingdom of Heaven, The Descent, Unforgiven, and Black Hawk Down.

Increasing cases of fake 8x and 16x DVD+R/-R discs

According to DigiTimes there are increasing cases of 8x and 4x DVD+R/-R discs being passed off as 16x and 8x, respectively. Only CMC Magnetics, Ritek, Prodisc Technology, Daxon Technology and Lead Data are currently capable of producing 16x DVD+R/-R discs, while second-tier and smaller makers produce 4x and/or 8x discs. As demand for 16x DVD+R/-R discs grows with the increasing use of 16x and 18x DVD burners, some makers have mislabeled their discs with higher speeds in order to grab profits. This is not a new phenomenon in DVD industry. Fake Media ID’s and even counterfeit DVD media have always existed in DVD webstores all over the internet.

Forrester research: Blu-ray wins?

Market researchers of Forrester are placing their bets on Blu-ray in the HD formats war. Their analysts have also come to the conclusion that PlayStation 3 plays an integral part in the format war, as PS3 is expected to start selling with a lot higher volumes than the expensive HD-DVD or Blu-ray stand-alone players do. If Sony can meet their expectations of 6M PS3’s sold by the middle 0f 2007, there are 6M Blu-ray players on the market and that is something that the HD-DVD camp has nothing to match with.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Unveils First Three 50GB Blu-ray Disc Titles. The heart-warming comedy Click, will be available on store shelves October 10. Black Hawk Down, features new Blu-Wizard(TM) technology and will be available to film fans on November 14 and The hilarious box office hit, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Are these good candidates for this kind of launch? I would never be so stupid to buy those titles. Actually I would not even take them as a free gift. Sony you should do better than this!
