PlayStation 3 will support HDMI 1.3

According to IGN, HDMI 1.3 standard will be incorporated in the PlayStation 3. If game developers choose to take advantage of 36- and 48-Bit color, the ability to output such a broader color spectrum could give the PS3 a solid technologic advantage over the Xbox 360. Well, we won’t be seeing HDTVs capable of displaying 36- and 48-Bit color until the end of this year at the earliest so it will seriously limit the practical impact the difference will have.

CMC and Ritek get class-A verification for 1x HD-DVD-R SL discs

CMC Magnetics has received the class-A verification for its 1x HD-DVD-R SL (high-definition DVD-R single-sided single-layer) discs with 15GB storage capacity from the DVD Forum last week, while Ritek indicated it obtained the same level of verification in late May of this year, according to DigiTimes.

Consumers confused by Blu-ray launch

The arrival of high definition Blu-ray player Samsung BD-P1000 to the store shelves has resulted in more confusion rather than sales in the United States. According to the source the U.S. consumers are not aware of the differences of HD-DVD and Blu-ray. On the other the fact that Samsung is the first Blu-ray player available is a bit confusing as well, as Sony is and has been the clear leader of the Blu-ray camp - and honestly Samsung is not really recognized as a high end home A/V vendor, even though they do have many decent products especially in the lower price range.

Lossless CD quality audio from iTunes?

As the new iTunes software now offers the option to encode in to 100% original quality Apple Lossless format, speculations have started whether the quality of the iTunes store is about to be upgraded. While the size of the download would increase significantly, a typical music CD would still be a lot smaller than a Divx encoded movie, so bandwidth shouldn’t be an issue either.

Taiyo Yuden announces the new single-sided dual-layer DVD-R (DVD-R DL) disc for video archiving purposes with 8x recording speed, fastest in the industry, to go on sale July 1 under the company’s own That’s brand. A DVD recorder capable of 8x recording speed can record 215 minutes of video data saved on a hard disk with standard definition onto the DVD-R DL disc in about 15 minutes.

BenQ and Plextor DVD burners counterfeited

Everybody knows about counterfeit movie-DVDs (etc) being sold in China but according to DigiTimes, there is also counterfeit entry-level DVD burners under various brand names, including BenQ and Plextor, in the China market. Recent price cuts for entry-level models to US$48-50 have boosted sales but reduced margins for distributors and retailers of branded products.

Apple is preparing a video store

With the success of iTunes and after developing video enabled iPods, the next logical step is to go into the movie business. In the music business the flat $0.99 per track pricing has appealed to the consumers, even though it can hardly be considered cheap.
