QuEnc is one of the better free MPEG video encoders and now it comes out with a major upgrade. Quenc is based on the FFMPEG and released as open source. The new version has a huge changelog with some interesting new additions. QuEnc is DVD Rebuilder compatible encoder, so you can use it for comrpessing DVD backups with high quality, using only free software.

Sony has begun shipping its 25GB BD media

Sony Electronics has begun shipping its 25GB single layer Blu-ray Disc media with AccuCOR technology. In addition, a dual layer 50GB capacity disc is set to debut in June. The BD-R (write-once) 25GB and BD-RE (rewritable) 25GB recording media have suggested retail prices of $20 and $25, respectively. The soon to come BD-R 50GB and BD-RE 50GB recording media will have suggested retail prices of $48 and $60, respectively.

Free Nero Digital Audio MP4 encoder released

Nero has made an interesting decision to release a free version of their MP4 audio software. The free versions are command prompt controlled tools, which means that it takes some expertise to use them. On the other hand a front end tool can be configured efficient usage of these codecs, such as the Exact Audio Copy CD ripper. Nero’s codec has been known for good quality and high compression ratio, so this is a piece of software well worth checking out.

MPEG royalty fees to China’s DVD player manufacturers

According to DigiTimes, there will be bad news for DVD player manufacturers in China. There is some pressure from representatives of the Movie Picture Expert Group (MPEG). China-based makers will need to start paying royalties for use of MPEG2 and MPEG4 patents starting this month.

Ten ways HD-DVD falls short

CNET seems to claim that HD-DVD launch (or perhaps even the whole HD-DVD format) is just a big joke. They are giving 10 “reasons” why HD-DVD won’t be a success. I guess we just need to wait and see whether the first Blu-ray player does any better in their review.
