Blu-ray to Shine In May

According to Red Herring, Sony plans to release the first batch of high-definition movies on its Blu-ray format in retail stores on May 23, meaning the rival HD-DVD format will have a head start of about two months when it launches in late March.

The RW PPI (Re-Writable Products Promotion Initiative) is carrying out its M8 test plan to facilitate volume production of 8x DVD-R DL discs and the corresponding burners/recorders. Volume production of both 8x DVD-R DL discs and devices should begin in the second half of the year.

HD DVD and Blu-ray launched with unfinished AACS copy protection

According to heisse online, Manufacturers of drives for HD DVD and Blu-ray discs aim to stick to their launch date in March even though the AACS copy protection is incomplete. The first devices will have an interim license (which allow the drives to be upgraded with the necessary AACS keys before the specification is finished). Up to now, Warner, Paramount and Universal have announced that they will be releasing HD-DVD movies in the US starting on March 28th.

Lite-On IT to roll out 18x DVD burner

Plextor recently announced its PX-760A 18x DVD burner, Lite-On IT stated it also plans to volume produce 18x DVD burners in the third quarter of this year, according to DigiTimes. Sources indicated that companies such as Sony and Pioneer may also launch 18x DVD burners.
