Convert .MKV video files to .m2ts for PlayStation 3 using tsMuxeR
Besides gaming, the Sony PlayStation 3 is an excellent device for high definition video playback. Besides Blu-ray disc playback support, the PS3 can also play high definition video files, which can be downloaded from the Internet. The most common HD video file format is currently the Matroska (.MKV) file format, which the PS3 does not currently support. The .MKV files however in many cases contain AVC encoded video with AC3 audio, which are PS3 supported formats. In order to play the files a simple process of converting the .MKV files to .m2ts files must be performed, but with the free tsMuxeR software this is very simple to achieve and takes only a few minutes.
Preconditions
- tsMuxeR software. Download from here and extract to appropriate folder
- Matroska .MKV video files with AVC (h.264) video and AC3 audio streams
Make sure you have some free space on your hard drive as a file with roughly the same size than the original file will be created in this process.
Using tsMuxeR
The conversion process using tsMuxeR is a very simple one. It consists of adjusting a few settings, which you can see highlighted in the screenshot on the right.
The video or audio content is not actually converted at all. All tsMuxeR does is that it extracts (demuxes) the video and audio from the Matroska .MKV file and wraps them (muxes) to a .m2ts transport stream format. The video or audio remain untouched, so the quality is not impacted and the process is very fast.
Perform the following steps:
- Open a .MKV file with AVC/AC3 content using the Add button
- Observe the track info for AVC profile information. If it shows a value higher than 4.1, then use the Change level function to adjust it down to 4.1
- Choose M2TS muxing as Output
- Click browse button and choose the name and location for your file
- Click Start muxing to begin
After a few minutes you should have files named filename.m2ts and filename.meta. Now all you need to do is to burn these on a DVD-R(W), and slip the disc to your PS3. The PlayStation recognizes the file on the disc allowing high definition video playback!

Sachin: not sure who you are referring to? If you are using MKV2VOB to encode the MKV filke i normally tick the box that says always transcode DTS and i have the box also ticked that says use 448 kps instead of ac3. you can play around with the boxes and try using different variations, these work so i use these. As for size of file, it will keep the same as far as i know, unless off course as i said in a earlier email i use rip bot, good prog but slow can take 5 hours to encode a movie. Not sure if it was i that ypou were referring your question too, if so i hope it helped, i am not a expert.I am still learning all this stuff.maybe you can get some other help from adubvideo as well.

damien: I normally use [1] Mkvmerge when i have a MP4 file then run through[2]mkv2vob, in here you select whether you want MP4 or M2TSor other format. When i already have a file you can run through[3] RIPBOT in here select file size as 4000mb and ends up between 3800-3900mb.Only reason i change the original MP$ is i cant get the audio to work as its in ACC. I have been told its because i have an older amp that i am using optical cable not HDMI. Sometimes if i want to keep the MP4 file i have to run it through [1] and [2] but in VOB i change the output to MP4 and it processes the audio to AC3. I am still learning all this stuff, so there may be other ways but this is what i do. Running through the progs 1 and 2 are quick, probably no longer then 7-8 mins .

@damien: Use the options on the “Split & Cut” tab of tsMuxer to make the output files whatever size you want. I use this to put movies onto an external FAT32 USB disk to play them on PS3.

If you would like to burn MTS video files from your sony camcorder to DVD or BD, you can burn Now MTS or M2TS video files from camcorder can be burned onto DVD or BD with the help of some burning software, like ImgBurn and multiAVCHD. These program are the most used software to burn DVD/BD.
If you would like do some editing before burning and want to get quality lossless video files, I suggest that you should use Aunsoft Final Mate which has a good performance in merging and splitting clips and produces video with the original format and quality.
I have tested it and now share with you, guys.

I am no expert but anyone with a ps3 have you considered stream lining thru media server, no more discs, play movies straight from your computer. If you have mkv files can convert them using mkvvob and change to M2ts which i prefer, i find that you can scan the movies easier without freezing up.[ when stramlining]
