Your favorite DVD media is Taiyo Yuden
The results of our first ever poll study say it: Taiyo Yuden is your favorite media. After over 320 responses we felt that the results are statistically valid and accurate, so here are the results as of 20th of August.
1. Taiyo Yuden: T.Y.’s number one position is really not a surprise. Their history of producing quality media goes back to early CD-R media days. Since then they have managed to retain a virtually stainless reputation of constantly producing top quality media. I don’t the same can be said from any other manufacturer?
2. RITEK: I have to say that RITEK is a bit of a surprise here at the second slot. They are one of the largest manufacturers, very popular and well known. RITEK gained market share by releasing the G04 dye which was decent quality media with a decent price tag. They have had some quality variation and one problem is that occasionally some B-grade batches find they way to the market. Still a certified A-grade RITEK should give a good recording experience.
3. Mitsubishi Chemicals: Better known as Verbatim, and best known for their patented Azo dye. The Azo dye gives Mitsubishi some advantage since it has proven to be a very compatible dye. Both the recorders and playback devices usually function very well using Mitsubishi media. Verbatim is often recommended for game console backups due to it’s high compatibility.
4-9 The rest: Most interesting about the rest of them is that CMC Magnetics, being the largest(?) manufacturer in the world, was positioned this low. After all their products are sold under many well known brands. CMC had a very bad reputation in the CD-R age and even though they are doing better with DVD media they still have a lot of quality variation. For some reason B-quality CMC media seems to find it’s way to the market constantly. CMC also makes discs for Mitsubishi, TDK, Philips, etc.
Ricoh has a positive reputation but it doesn’t seem to bee too popular or widely available. That is a shame as the ones I have tested have been awesome. The comments about Fuji are usually quite positive as well. Prodisc has always been able to offer a decent price/quality ratio, and based on the ones I have tested they are delivering an Ok qua
lity media.
