Xbox 360: Plan-B for Blu-ray

Is Microsoft losing it’s faith in HD-DVD? It seems that such statement could be read in between the lines, as Microsoft revealed that they do have a plan-B for the Blu-ray format. Earlier they announced the (extremely lame) external HD-DVD player add-on for Xbox 360 and now it seems they could do the same with Blu-ray as well. So the path Microsoft has chosen is kind of safe - they can offer a poor support for both formats, while hanging in with the legacy DVD for the games. Smart tactics, or a huge mistake - only time will tell?

Hedging its bet on HD-DVD as the standard for the next-generation DVDs, Microsoft on Wednesday left open the possibility of selling a Blu-ray DVD player for its Xbox 360 game console.

The plan adds another layer of doubt in the heated battle between HD-DVD and Blu-ray for dominance of what is expected to become a $40-billion worldwide market. Until now, Microsoft has been one of the strongest backers of the HD-DVD technology being championed by Toshiba.
