Sony PS3: 600k sold in Europe, no 80GB model coming

Couple of PlayStation 3 news today. First of all more sales figures from the much waited European launch, and the initial numbers stand at 600.000 units sold at the launch. This would mean that more than 60% of the initially shipped units are already sold, and the product still seems to be selling, so better grab yours now - they might be running short on supply at some point. Eurogamer.net also reports that Sony has no plans to release the rumoured 80GB model of the PS3

“Yes, 600,000 is the figure for Europe,” a spokesperson told Eurogamer, after the BBC reported the number yesterday without comment.

The idea, Sony said ahead of launch, was to make sure it was possible for people to go into a shop on the day of launch and actually buy one. A quick survey of the crap video shop down the road revealed this is possible, but if you actually want to buy it they have to send Dave up to the stock room.

Sony has told Eurogamer this afternoon that it currently has no plans to produce an 80GB PS3, despite emerging reports that it filed with the FCC for the model.

“The 80GB we’re not making a comment on, but we don’t have any plans at the moment,” a spokesperson for Sony Europe told us.
