Philips certification for Ritek 8x DVD+R DL discs

Ritek announced on January 24 it obtained certification for 8x DVD+R DL discs from Royal Philips Electronics last week, becoming the only the third company to receive such certification. Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM) and Ricoh are the only other two companies to have received the certification.

Since there presently are only three makers, the OEM price of an 8x DVD+R DL disc is about US$2.5 higher than that for a 2.4x DVD+R DL disc, which ranges from US$1.90-2.00, Ritek pointed out. Production of 8x DVD+R DL discs currently has a high gross margin of about 50%.

Japan-based Fujiwara-Rothchild forecasts that global demand for DVD+R/-R DL discs will rocket from 50 million discs in 2005 to 200 million this year, and Ritek aims to occupy 70% of the 2006 global market, Ritek indicated.
