Blu-ray and PlayStation 3
There has been a lot of talk about the High Definition DVD formats, now as Sony announced the release date and price for the PS3. The fate of PS3 and Blu-ray seem to go hand in hand. While the PlayStation 3 pricey, the fact that it is a genuine HD video player does give it an edge - especially because the first High Definition players are expected to be priced even more expensive than the capable gaming device.
But Sony and Blu-ray are a bit late. Microsoft and the HD-DVD camp are trying to make the best out the 6 months they have time until the PS3 launch. Microsoft is already preparing a (lame) external HD-DVD player add-on for Xbox 360.
Sony president and COO Stan Glasgow was optimistic about the Blu-ray and was sure that it would be the format to emerge as the winner. Definitely the PS2 helped to popularize the DVD format in some parts of the world. According to Glasgow the consumers would decide in 12-24 months who will win the optical disc war - Blu-ray or HD-DVD. I personally wonder how high the market demand actually is. The transition to the next generation is expensive, as TVs and receivers should be upgraded as well. What if the consumers decide that for now the DVD is good enough, like they have done with the audio CD?
